Cheney Lake Park

Not far from our apartment sits Cheney Lake Park. The lake finally dethawed a couple of days after we got back from our trip to Las Vegas. Adria and I took an evening walk around the lake, and took some pictures of the lake.

The black and purple thing in the top right corner is the sun. I didn't doctor with photo with my skills using MS Paint. I am not sure why my cell phone camera made it look like this.

Here is another picture of the lake that doesn't have what looks like a blackhole sun, or a giant black spot like the end of the movie 2010. Also of note is that these pictures were taken after 8pm.

The Hoover Dam

While we were on our trip to Las Vegas for Adria's sister's wedding, Adria took an extra day and took a trip to the Hoover Dam. What follows are some pictures from our day trip:

Presently Hoover Dam also carries traffic across it. However they are in the process of building a bridge that would reroute the traffic away from the dam. Here are some pictures of the under-construction bridge:

Here is one of the "Winged Figures of The Republic", which are part of the dedication monument on the Nevada side of the dam.

Also on the dedication monument is a star chart that will allow future generations (or celesterial visitors a.k.a. aliens) to determine when the dam was dedicated based solely on the location and apparent magnitude of the stars on the dedication day, although based on the rather lengthy explanation of the methodology of how to read the star chart that also is part of the dedication monument, I think that it is unlikely that anyone will have the wherewithal to ascertain the dedication day from this star chart

Viva Las Vegas

Adria and I recently got back from a trip to Las Vegas for the wedding of her sister Kedra. Adria flew down a couple of days earlier to spend some time with her parents and siblings before the event, and to give her more time between flights between Anchorage and Las Vegas. On one of the nights Adria, along with her parents and siblings got to ride around The Strip in a limo. Below are some pictures from the limo ride:


After I arrived on Friday, we got a tour of the wedding chapel that Kedra's father-in-law runs. It isn't one of the archetypal Las Vegas quickie wedding chapels where Elvis performs the ceremony, The Little Chapel of the Flowers is much classier (and as the website claims is both elegant and legendary).

On Friday night there was a barbecue for the families of the bride and groom. As part of this barbecue the Davis side had been asked to write and perform a song about the bride and groom and it fell to Adria and me to write this song. We took Chamillonaire's "Ridin Dirty" (and by extension Weird Al's "White and Nerdy") as our inspiration mainly because "Ridin Dirty" is one of the most ridiculous songs that either of us could think of. We got Adria's sibilings to perform with us and our song was well recieved, which kind of suprised us because our lyrical skills (as shown by the lyrics) and combined flow are much closer to Kevin Federline than to Rapper's Delight or O State Ballaz.

On Saturday, Kedra was married. Below is a picture of Kedra with her husband Jeremy:

Later that night they had a wedding reception. Because it was Cinco De Mayo, they had some piñatas made to look like them.


Towards the end of the reception, they took the piñatas and beat them with as stick, which made me think of the scene in Napoleon Dynamite where Pedro creates a piñata that looks like Summer Wheatley.
